Franz Schubert: The Last Classicist
Although Franz Schubert (1797–1828) is best known as a composer of lieder, his work also embraces the genres of dramatic, choral, symphonic, and chamber music.
This course will explore his most ambitious forays into the major musical forms, including his numerous theatrical and operatic ventures. We will see how his lifelong interest in sacred music led him to create two great masterpieces, the Masses in A flat and E flat. We will also learn how Schubert's mastery of symphonic and chamber music places him squarely in the tradition of Haydn and Mozart.
Please note that enrolment in this course is limited to adults 55+.
