Mozart the Dramatist

We all know Mozart as the supreme composer: He was hugely prolific despite his short span of years; a genius (everything he touched turned to gold); and versatile, excelling in every genre of music there was and bringing some (the piano concerto, for instance) to a state of perfection.

Less known is the fact that Mozart was a great dramatist—arguably the greatest dramatic composer of them all. He understood human nature, and he was able to convey this understanding with dazzling compositional skill. No matter how good the libretto, the dramatic power of Mozart’s operas comes primarily from the music with which he tells his story.
