Adobe Framemaker: Creating Technical Documentation
Adobe FrameMaker is an essential tool for publishing business and technical documents. It is especially efficient if you want to produce both print and online documents from one set of source files. The course is fast-paced and covers a lot of material. It assumes that you are using FrameMaker in a technical writing environment.
Prerequisite(s):
There are no academic prerequisites, but you must be able to create tables, define paragraph styles, and generate a table of contents and an index in Microsoft Word.

What will I learn?
By the end of the course, you will be able to do the following:
- Design a page template
- Define table, paragraph, and character styles
- Import graphics
- Insert cross-references, index entries, and variables
- Create conditional text
- Troubleshoot common auto-generation problems
- Create a multi-file book and publish it to PDF and HTML

- Individual exercises
How will I be evaluated?
Your grade will be based on the following:
- Two assignments: (20 marks each)
- Four quizzes: (10 marks each)
Required hardware and software
In this course, you will work and communicate online. We will deliver the course materials and communication tools to you online through a program called WebCT. You gain access to this program by registering for this course.
Technical requirements:
- Access to a PC computer with full administrative rights so you can install trial software. Due to the trial software requirements, this course is not directly accessible on a Mac. You may be able to run the trial software by using a Windows partition or emulator on your Mac. Visit this Adobe tech comm blog for options.
- Windows XP or later
- High-speed Internet access
- A web browser that supports tables, frames, Java, and Javascript
(The list of browsers supported by WebCT Vista 8.03 is available online.)
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Microsoft Word 2003 or later (You should know how to create and apply styles, tables, tables of contents, and indexes.)
- Adobe Framemaker
(This is available online from Adobe. The trial lasts for only 30 days, so please do not download the software until after the course begins, or you will not have sufficient time to complete the assignments before the trial ends.)
System requirements for Adobe Framemaker 10 (from the Adobe website):
- Intel® Pentium® 4 or faster processor
- Microsoft® Windows® XP with Service Pack 3 , Windows Vista® Service Pack 2, or Windows 7
- 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
- 1.7GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on flash-based storage devices)
- DVD-ROM drive
- 1024x768 screen resolution (1280x800 recommended) with 16-bit video card
