Do we really see, or do we only believe that we see?

In our age of attention deficit, do we actually see what is around us, or do we simply accept and receive what people relate to us? Do we really see the springing of spring, or do we hear about it from journalists? How much and how long do we need to see in order to discern seeing? Is there any need to see? Should belief trump seeing?
