Philosophers' Café

Documentary ethics

Mon, 07 May 2012 7:00 PM

John Grierson, a filmmaker, described documentary film as the “creative treatment of actuality.” But where does the real truth lie? Is it on the cutting room floor, or up on the big screen? Whether it’s a glimpse into life at a nursing home or immigrants detained for questioning at an airport, filmmakers attempt to uncover unseen areas of life and provoke a response. What does the filmmaker owe to his/her subject and audience? Consider the people who do not fully understand how their stories are being used; is this exploitation, or does art trump all?

Open for debate: Philosophy on film

The word doxa means a belief or opinion that is tested in open argument and debate. With this idea in mind, The Philosophers’ Café, in partnership with DOXA Documentary Film Festival, will offer a special series of cafés dedicated to some of the most pressing, divisive, and fascinating issues of the day that are captured in documentary film.

Co-sponsored by DOXA Documentary Film Festival. Visit www.doxafestival.ca for complete scheduling information.
