Why Were the Election Polls So Wrong?
BC has joined Alberta in being the second province in just over a year to defy election polls and see upset victories for the parties not expected to win by pollsters, pundits, and political scientists.
Why were the polls so wrong in reflecting the mood of voters? Join a discussion by four of BC’s leading pollsters— Kyle Braid of Ipsos Reid, Mario Conseco formerly of Angus Reid, Steve Mossop of Insights West, and Daniel Savas formerly of Ipsos Reid—as they examine this intriguing question.

Speakers
Kyle Braid, Ipsos Reid’s Vice President of Public Affairs, manages the firm’s Vancouver and Calgary offices, spending most of his time on public affairs research and acting as the firm’s main media spokesperson for BC. His specialties include issues management, communications, and reputation research. With Ipsos for 12 years, he has worked in the research industry for more than 20, and is an experienced focus group moderator, having conducted more than 800 groups across North America.
Mario Canseco, former spokesperson and polling analyst for Angus Reid Public Opinion and Vision Critical, is Vice President of Public Affairs at Insights West. He is responsible for clients in the public sector, non-profit organizations, associations, and education clients. He has conducted polling for 36 elections, with a 95% success rate in calling the winner.
Steve Mossop, President of Insights West, has more than 20 years of experience perfecting the art and science of market research, leveraging the technology-based advances in the industry to tackle clients’ challenges and opportunities. For over 18 years, he oversaw Angus Reid’s, and, then, Ipsos-Reid’s Western division, growing it to become Western Canada’s largest provider of market research.
Daniel Savas, an adjunct Professor in SFU's Masters of Public Policy Program, is a 25-year public affairs and market research specialist, who has served 18 years as Ipsos Reid’s Senior Vice President.
