Gordon Harris, MCIP, is president and CEO of SFU Community Trust.
Gordon is a well-respected Vancouver based professional urban planner. For nearly 20 years he provided consulting services to a wide range of Canadian and international clients. In his practice, he was recognized as one of Canada’s leading providers of market-based economic analysis and strategic planning support to local governments and the private sector.
Gordon served for several years on the advisory board of the Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity and is a member of Smart Growth BC. He was chair of the Planning Institute of British Columbia’s membership committee from 2004 to 2006 and was a member of the Institute’s governing council during this time. His professional planning work in BC, Alberta, and Ontario has earned awards from the Canadian Institute of Planners, the Planning Institute of BC, and the Alberta Association of Planners.
Gordon has been a frequent presenter at North American and international conferences and an occasional guest lecturer at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He is a contributing editor of the Ontario Planning Journal and a senior associate with the Canadian Urban Institute, where he chairs its annual national urban issues conference in Toronto.
As President and CEO of SFU Community Trust, Gordon oversees the continued development of UniverCity, an awar- winning community adjacent to the SFU Burnaby Mountain Campus. To date, more than 1,000 homes have been completed, along with the first phase of the Town Centre. The community has been praised for numerous sustainability features including the Vancity Community Transit Pass, innovative zoning that permits legalized suites within suites, a comprehensive stormwater management plan, and green building guidelines that result in healthier and more energy- and resource- efficient homes.
