Julian completed his International Baccalaureate at the United World College of the Atlantic (1982), and graduated from Bristol University (U.K., 1986) with a first in geology.
He then spent three years working on various international development projects in Southern Africa and Northern India, and he also completed a number of high-altitude mountaineering ascents of peaks in Zanskar, Ladakh, Nepal and Bhutan. Julian came to Canada in 1988 on a Commonwealth Scholarship and completed his M.Sc. in interdisciplinary studies/resource management at UBC (1990), specializing in collaboration and conflict resolution. After a year as a research associate at the Westwater Research Institute, he was one of the three founding principals of Dovetail Consulting in 1991. Julian also recently held a position as adjunct professor at UBC's Institute for Resources and Environment and is currently an associate with SFU's Centre for Dialogue.
Over the past two decades, Julian has worked on a wide variety of management consulting projects for all levels of government, First Nations, non-profit organizations and the private sector. He has developed a reputation for his consistently high standard of work as an organizational development consultant, strategic planner, coach, facilitator, trainer and research/writer. In 2009, Julian secured international accreditation as a Certified Professional Facilitator© from the International Association of Facilitators.
