Charles Tan, P.Eng, MAppSc., is a risk management practitioner and consultant building on a career in environmental and health and safety program audit and development. He served most recently as leader of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) at the BC Safety Authority (BCSA). During his more than 12 years at the BCSA, Charles created risk register reports, heat maps, risk control tools and connectivity diagrams to support the ERM program. These tools allowed board, management and employees to manage risks from an enterprise perspective. As a result, he grew the risk culture in the organization.
At the BCSA, Charles actively assessed organizational risks, which led to implementation of a business continuity plan to resume critical services from disruptive events such as power failure, fire and breakdown in IT services. He also developed and implemented an electronic resource allocation program to prioritize high-risk installations for assessments. Furthermore, he ensured a comprehensive coverage was maintained with the purchase of insurance policies to protect the organization against directors and officers’ liability, professional liability, crime and property exposures.
Charles has also hosted events to promote sharing of risk management knowledge amongst risk professionals in Vancouver. He is a professional engineer and a member of the Business Continuity Institute, U.K. He has also completed the Professional Certificate in Strategic Decision and Risk Management, at the Stanford Center for Professional Development, Stanford University.
