Danse Macabre: Perspectives on Life and Death in Western Literature

Join us over three Saturdays to explore end-of-life issues from the perspective of writers and artists from classical antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Romantic and Modernist eras and the present day. Learn how societies, under the shifting influences of religion and philosophy, have thought about death and its connection to living.

We will focus on recurring themes around death—taboos, fears and curiosity—as they’ve developed in Western consciousness. Including other art forms to enrich our exploration, we will consider how literature has represented the points of view of the dying, the bereaved, caregivers and medical professionals over time.

This is the third course in a new series on end-of-life matters at SFU Continuing Studies. The courses can be taken individually, and are of interest to health professionals, legal professionals, policymakers, researchers, gerontologists, psychologists, social workers, educators and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the increasingly complex field of end of life.

Story Catching: Mining Memories Through Guided Autobiography

Need a writing kick-start? Guided Autobiography provides a gently structured nudge to help you recall, write about and share meaningful and engaging memories. Originally developed as a method to enhance life review, Guided Autobiography leaves you with five short legacy stories and insights into who you are and the life you've led.

Each week we'll explore a common theme, such as family, health or work. Between classes you'll write roughly two pages about your experience of the theme, then share this aloud with your small group in the next session. We share only what is comfortable to share. We'll ponder, laugh and provide mutual support. We'll learn about writing, with a focus on our experience.

This online summer series, offered in a live, interactive format, is designed to lead to strong group bonding and mutual support. Classes are offered at set times, with everyone meeting online together. All you need is a quiet space and a computer with a camera and microphone.

A $62 discount will be applied automatically for adults 55+.
