Liberal Arts for Adults 55+

SFU Seniors Lifelong Learners Society

Our history

Created in 2005, our society is an independent, non-profit society registered under the British Columbia Society Act. Our roots can be traced to the Opsimath Club, founded in the 1970s.

We are governed by bylaws and a board of directors, elected at our Annual General Meeting (normally early in the fall term). The use of SFU in our name maintains our link to the university while representing past and present older students at Simon Fraser University.

Our philosophy

Lifelong learning through active participation in group situations and activities adds vibrancy and excitement to the life of mature adults.

Our mission

To fulfill our philosophy, we are committed
to the following:

  • Providing and promoting communication between our members, Simon Fraser University and the community.
  • Fostering a feeling of fellowship among all older SFU students, past and present.
  • Maintaining a liaison with the director of the Adults 55+ Program regarding input on courses that fulfill the unique interests of older students.
  • Providing financial assistance to undergraduate students through grants from our endowment funds.

Our mandate

By joining the SFU Seniors Lifelong Learners Society (SLLS), you can help support the SFU Outreach Project. The people working on this project believe that “promoting education for seniors can’t be confined to the Vancouver city limits.”

The SFU Outreach Project has produced six DVDs that more than 4,000 older adults across Canada have watched. Many more have watched these videos online. We are very proud to be a part of this project and wish to continue to be a part of it.  With your membership in SLLS, we can make this happen.

Our society also supports SFU Continuing Studies' Free Saturday Forums at SFU Vancouver and the Free Saturday Previews at Surrey City Centre Library. These events, which take place several times a year, have been very popular. Open to adults, they are free but require registration.

Our society donates to the Adults 55+ Program endowment fund. This fund gives a bursary to an SFU student each year.

Becoming a member

As a member of the society, you can stand for election to the board and help make decisions about the society's direction and activities. As a board member, you can make decisions that shape the university’s academic destiny in the area of continuing education for adults 55+.
