Seniors Program

SFU Seniors Lifelong Learners Society

Created in 2005, our society is an independent, non-profit, registered society under the B.C. Society Act. Our roots are in the Opsimath Club, which was founded in the 1970s. We are governed by our own bylaws and board of directors, which are elected annually at our Annual General Meeting. The use of SFU in our name maintains our link to the university while representing past and present senior students at Simon Fraser University.

Our philosophy

Lifelong learning through active participation in group situations and activities adds vibrancy and excitement to the life of mature adults.

Our mission

To fulfill our philosophy, we are committed
to the following:

  • Providing and promoting communication between our members, Simon Fraser University, and the community.
  • Fostering a feeling of fellowship among all SFU senior students, past and present.
  • Maintaining a liaison with the Seniors Program director regarding input on courses that fulfill the unique interests of seniors.
  • Providing financial assistance to undergraduate students through grants from our endowment funds.

Becoming a member

By joining the SFU Seniors Lifelong Learners Society (SLLS), you can help support the SFU Outreach Project. The people working on this project believe that “promoting education for seniors can’t be confined to the Vancouver city limits.” The outreach program has produced six DVDs that more than 4,000 seniors across Canada have watched. Many more have watched these videos online. We are very proud to be a part of this project and wish to continue to be a part of it.  With your membership in SLLS, we can make this happen.

Our society also supports SFU Continuing Studies' Free Saturday Forums. These forums, which take place six times a year at SFU Vancouver, have been very popular.

Our society makes donations to the Seniors Program endowment fund.  This endowment fund gives a bursary to a student at SFU each year.

By joining the society, you can help shape our organization by participating in the election of our board members. As a society member, if you so choose, you can stand to be elected to our board and help make decisions in the direction of our society. As a board member, you can make decisions that shape the university’s academic destiny in the area of continuing education for seniors.
