Aboriginal Pre-Health Program

Aboriginal education

Prepare for a career in health

Help make your community stronger and healthier through a rewarding career in health care. Nursing, midwifery, and dental hygiene are only a few opportunities you can choose from.

In SFU’s eight-month Aboriginal Pre-Health Program, you’ll get a solid orientation to your career options, a boost of encouragement and support, and the academic pre-requisites that will set you up to succeed in a university bachelor’s degree program.

Build a foundation for academic success

In addition to taking the health pre-requisites you need, you’ll build a solid foundation of academic and personal success skills as you prepare to transition to university. You’ll study a variety of topics:

  • Diversity, knowledge, and cultural traditions in indigenous communities
  • Foundational, university-level reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Foundational, university level biology and chemistry, with a specific focus on Aboriginal health and wellness issues
  • Other selected topics in Aboriginal health

As you work through this bridging program, you’ll receive support from Aboriginal Elders and student mentors who provide subject-specific tutoring. You’ll also become familiar with SFU and our student support services.

Get into Simon Fraser University

When you successfully complete the Aboriginal Pre-Health Program, you'll earn academic credit as well as conditional acceptance into SFU, Canada’s leading comprehensive university.

Is the Aboriginal Pre-Health Program for you?

This university bridging program is for students of Aboriginal heritage (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit) who are thinking of pursuing a health career, but don't feel quite ready to go to university.
