Part-time, online Next-Generation Transportation Certificate

We need transportation that will stand up to the challenges of the future

Civil engineers, urban planners, consultants and community leaders face formidable transportation challenges today: new patterns and modes of movement, decaying infrastructure, global-scale logistics, an explosion of data and disruptive technologies, and a public who assumes nearly free infrastructure while demanding more transportation choices.

Looking at today’s needs as well as five years into the future, next-generation transportation professionals aim for solutions that, by working across disciplines, support community resilience in the face of uncertainty and change.

Learn to create cities for the next generation

SFU’s new online Certificate in Next-Generation Transportation is designed to help mid-career professionals use next-generation transportation strategies to advance livable and sustainable cities of the future. We’ll emphasize case studies from around the world with policies and practices that resolve conflicts and explore trade-offs between different modes of transportation.

Our instructors—experienced, fresh-thinking sustainability leaders, policy-makers, planners and decision-makers from North America and beyond—will provide context for past practice, improve on the conventional, discuss the radical and explore the possibilities that will make up transportation for the next generation.

Gordon Price, program director, on the Next-Generation Transportation Certificate

“We live what we teach. And we bring the people who do things—the architects and the planners, the landscape architects and the engineers, people in the community—into the classroom.”

Build a professional network of planners and engineers

You will work through this online certificate program with a cohort—a group of professional peers from different geographic and professional backgrounds who share their transportation experience, ideas and expertise. Assignments reflect and build upon the real-world experience that everyone brings to the program.

"I have found the course an excellent way to work through a whole range of issues I face every week in my work as a consultant urban designer in Auckland. The way the course has been devised and structured online is great, and I have found it to be true to its word of allowing me to work through each week at my own pace."
— Stuart Houghton, Urban Designer, Associate Principal, Boffa Miskell, Auckland, New Zealand

"Next-Generation Cities and Transportation helped me to fully understand why the 'best transportation plan is a great-land use plan!' Great land-use plans include all kinds of multi-modal options, and we were provided with tools to learn the emerging vernacular and implementation methods for all kinds of modality; nothing was left out of the conversation...

Being exposed to, and learning about, other targeted planning efforts, and to speak with a range of amazing practitioners on how they have handled very similar issues through this course, has allowed me to open my thinking about transportation and land use as, yes it's true, a harmonious pair.
— Kristi Beunder, Principal, CivicWorks Planning and Design, Calgary, Alberta
