Students can apply at any time throughout the year to Communication Co-op; the earlier, the better. If you haven’t already submitted your Co-op application, simply complete the onlne Co-operative Education Application Form today and be sure to specify “Communication” as your intended Co-op program.  

We’ll respond to you within 10 business days to advise you of your acceptance to the program. Communication Co-op has specific steps that you will need to complete in order to be fully approved into the program.  

We do recommend you apply no later than TWO semesters prior to your first intended work term. For example, if you would like to complete your first work term during the fall semester, you would apply to our program no later than the spring semester. The following table may assist with your planning:

Once you have been accepted to Co-op, register and complete Bridging Online I (BOL). BOL I is a two-week online course which focuses on helping you use what you have learned in school effectively in the workplace and vice versa. Meet with one of the Communication Co-op team members once you have completed BOL I to review your application process.

Now you will work towards your final approval to Communication Co-op by meeting the following criteria prior to your first work search. If you have any questions, we encourage you to contact us.  

Attend a Mandatory New Student Session two semesters prior to the anticipated work term. Sessions are held second month of every semester; check out Important Dates for dates, locations, and times.  

At the session, we will provide detailed program information and to answer any questions you may have. We will review Co-op policies and procedures, and go into detail about what will happen once you have been accepted into the program.

Please complete and bring the following application package to your session:

  1. Online Intake Form (submit online)
  2. Completed Intake Questions (download pdf) - You can complete this form by typing in your answers, but will not be able to save it unless you have the full version of Acrobat. You can, however, print out the completed form. 
  3. A copy of your unofficial transcripts (available from the Student Information System at http://www.go.sfu.ca
  4. Signed Co-op Agreement Form (download pdf) 
  5. A letter addressed to us if your GPA is lower than 2.7 and/or you have more than 80 credit hours. If your GPA is under 2.7, please explain how you intend on raising it; if you have over 80 credit hours, please show us how you intend on completing a minimum of three co-op semesters prior to graduation, without ending on a work term and alternating co-ops with academic semesters. 

Acceptance into the program is contingent upon receiving these documents.

Attend one of our resume, cover letter and interview workshops once you have completed BOL I by registering under Events in Symplicity. You will then sign up for a one-on-one meeting held in the beginning of the semester, with one of the coordinators.  

Please bring the following to your one-on-one meeting:  

  1. Your updated resume after attending the resume workshop 
  2. Your cover letter and a corresponding job description

Important Application Information

The Co-op Application fee is $125. Click here for details on the Refund Policy.

The application fee will be posted to your SFU Account upon processing of your Co-operative Education Application Form. Please allow one week for the charge to be posted to your account. At your convenience, verify the charge and make a payment to your SFU Account. Please note that it is not imperative that you pay the application fee immediately, you may pay the application fee with your tuition fees.  

The basic Co-op work term fee for a four-month Co-op work term is $706.30, and includes workshops, personal consultations, ongoing support and resources. This fee is payable only when you have accepted a job and are officially registered in a work term.
