It is important to realize the commitment that is involved with Co-op. Here are some points that will help you to make the best out of your co-op experience.

  • Expect the co-op process to take up a lot of your time; students in the past have said that it's like taking another course.
  • Co-op is about learning what you like and what you don't like. Don't be discouraged by other students who had a bad experience in a certain field/job. Just because you've heard about one bad experience does not mean that it's a bad position.
  • Occasionally students might not be placed in a particular semester. This is normal; some of our best co-op students were not placed in their first semester!
  • Attend the workshops because they are held for your benefit. You will be competing against students who have gone to the workshops - who do you think will come out ahead?
  • Don't worry if you didn't get a job immediately since the majority of our students get placed later in the semester! The lightning round (which starts at the same time classes end) is a busy time for Communication Co-op. Hang in there! Some of our best jobs come in late in the semester.
  • If you change your address or home phone number at any time during the semester, make sure you inform the co-op office.
