Many forms of financial assistance are available for Co-op students completing international work terms. These include Financial Awards, Scholarships, Bursaries, and Student Loans

Financial Awards  

SFU International Co-op Award

This award is designed to assist students with their participation in an International Co-op work experience.  It provides assistance to students who demonstrate financial need, as it relates to accepting an international co-op work term.  Awards are valued up to $1000 each and are available each semester for co-op students of any faculty participating in an International Co-op work term.  Applications are accepted on an on-going basis, but must be completed prior to the start of the work term.  

C.A.R.E. SFU Global Travel Award

The C.A.R.E. Housing Society distributes and donates Asia Miles points to make air travel possible for civic engagement, international service learning, and humanitarian work in developing countries and disaster areas. Projects may include health rehabilitation, development, and reconstruction. If you are considering participating in an international humanitarian aid project, you could receive a round-trip flight to areas served by Asia Miles worldwide partner airlines (tax not included). To be eligible, students must be working or volunteering for a not-for-profit organization and completing some form of humanitarian aid. Students need not be part of co-op to be eligible. Project commitments must be a minimum of 1 month in length, but longer project commitments are preferred. Applicants must be flexible on departure dates and routes. 

Hong Kong University BC Alumni Award

Available for Spring semester to Co-op students working in Hong Kong.  

India Student Mobility Award

This award is designed to assist students undertaking study or experiential learning in India. Awards are available for each semester. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis but must be completed prior to the start of the experiential learning opportunity.

BC Bearing Engineers Limited Award

Awarded during Summer semester to Co-op students working in Latin American, including Mexico.  The award is intended to off-set travel and/or living expenses for the duration (not exceeding one year) spent in Latin America or Mexico. If multiple applications are received, the award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA. The recipient will be selected by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee on the recommendation of the director, Co-operative Education. Value: $300

Scholarships  

One World International Scholarship  

Scholarships of $1,000 - $3,000 each are available from the One World International Scholarship program. The scholarships are available to students enrolled in a program of at least one year in length, leading to a credential offered by a BC public post- secondary institution.  

An eligible study/work abroad program is an activity that is either a formal part of the student's credential program at his/her home institution or that carries academic credit recognized by the student's home institution. Programs must be at least three weeks in length, and no longer than one year.  

Premier's One World Scholarship  

Ten to twenty awards worth between $5,000 and $10,000 will be available in 2011 from the Premier's One World Scholarship program for a B.C. public post-secondary student wishing to pursue post-secondary education outside of Canada or the United States. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit.

Bursaries

SFU International Co-op Education Bursary (Go to the Financial Aid search database for further resources.)  

Bursaries will be granted in any term to students in good academic standing who are accepted to the Co-operative Education Program and are enrolled in a work term outside of Canada. To be eligible students must be placed with a co-operative education employer and be in good standing with the co-op program. The award will be made on the basis of demonstrated financial need.  

Student Loans  

For extra financial assistance, Co-op students are eligible to apply for a student loan.
