To create a self-directed work term,  identify an employer that you would like to work for and develop your own Cooperative Education learning opportunity.   Your Co-op Program will assist in this process.  If the position meets the necessary Co-op Work-term requirements, you may be eligible to receive a $100 SFU Bookstore gift certificate.

For all students going on an International Co-op work-term, and requiring further financial assistance, please refer to the financial assistance section for funding sources.

If you have questions along the way, be sure to check in with your home faculty co-op coordinator or the International Co-op Coordinator (icoop@sfu.ca). See below for more international job resources.

Did you know that you can combine an international exchange with an international work term? This is a great way to extend your stay abroad and to use your new international connections in your host country. While you are abroad on exchange, you can start to look for internships and accommodation following your academic semester. You can then work with SFU Co-op to turn this internship into a self-directed placement and make it count towards your Co-op program! For information on how to apply for an international exchange, visit SFU International.
