This special Communication Field School will focus on the political economy of innovative “industrial” clusters, ranging from sophisticated technologies such as software and new media, to the highly successful and vertically integrated cultural communities in Guadalajara, Mexico and its environs. Guadalajara is uniquely suited to this study, since within and near the city are world class artisanal industries, tourism-based cultural industries, and modern high-tech industries, both Mexican-owned and multinationals. The Field School will be run in conjunction with a similar course offering at the Universidad de Guadalajara by the Institute for the Support of Innovation in small- and medium-sized enterprises (IDITpyme) in their School of Economics and Administrative Sciences (CUCEA) for Mexican students.
