Police want mobile phone cash cards stopped

The untraceability of the current cash cards for subscription-free mobile phones is a boon to professional criminals according to Norwegian police.
Related stories:

"The use of cash cards by criminals allows them to remain anonymous to police. This often creates problems with police efforts to solve serious crimes," Agder police chief Arne Pedersen told newspaper Fædrelandsvennen.

Pedersen wants the type of card in circulation today banned and future cards to be linked to a registered subscription.

Pedersen said that criminals use cash cards to avoid wiretaps and that it was not unusual to confiscate up to ten mobile phones per individual in professional crime circles.

After Norway's special division for economic crime, Økokrom, pointed out the ease with which criminals use unregistered mobile phones cash card users must be registered from Feb. 1, 2005.
