Chris obtained an Honour degree in Environmental Science and Biology from Simon Fraser University in 1999 and is currently pursuing Master degree in Human Geography through his research with the Centre for Sustainable Community Development. His graduate work focuses on examining the relationships between specific market mechanisms (e.g. zoning and development bylaws), planning frameworks (e.g. eco-industrial networking), and community capital indicators (e.g. resource efficiency), in order to develop guidelines for the sustainable development of community economies. He is specifically interested in the development of new market actors, such as community development corporations, that can catalyze SCD through consulting services, business creation, and strategic resource development. To that end, he co-founded the Light House Sustainable Building Centre (www.sustainablebuildingcentre.com), an enterprising non-profit dedicated to facilitating the shift to more sustainable building practices through education, partnership and consulting services. He has also co-founded the Buy Local Store initiative which launches in January 2007 and will develop a feasibility study for the creation of a new food products market actor to facilitate “buying, selling and being local”.
Chris’s diverse background includes wind energy, hydrogeology, and natural history consulting; seabird, songbird and humpback whale research; environmental policy analysis with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; teaching work with Science AL!VE, Northwest Community College and SFU; and international development experience in Latin America. His community and academic contributions have earned him numerous awards including Volunteer Vancouver Leader of Tomorrow Award and the SSHRC Masters Canada Graduate Scholarship.
