As Director of the Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD) and Professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University, Dr. Mark Roseland has been cited by the Vancouver Sun as one of British Columbia’s “top 50 living public intellectuals”. Under his leadership, the Centre provides research, training and advisory services to the sustainable community development sector in BC, Canada and internationally through a team of associates drawn from the University and professional practice.
Dr. Roseland lectures internationally and advises communities and governments on sustainable development policy and planning. He chairs the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Simon Fraser University Community Trust, which is responsible for the UniverCity sustainable community development project (www.UniverCity.ca). Dr. Roseland also teaches courses on sustainable community development that have focused extensively on projects such as the City of Vancouver’s model sustainable community being developed at Southeast False Creek, the SFU UniverCity project, the Vancouver-Whistler 2010 Olympic Bid, and the City of Vancouver’s proposed “sustainability precinct.”
Dr. Roseland has published widely, and his work has been cited in numerous journals. Over 20,000 copies of his book Toward Sustainable Communities: Resources for Citizens and Their Governments are in circulation internationally. First published by the Government of Canada’s National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, a revised and updated third edition of this landmark book was published by New Society Publishers in 2005. Dr. Roseland has been awarded over two dozen funded research projects from a wide range of sources. In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Roseland’s teaching also has a direct impact on sustainable community development through his focus on research topics for his students that address current planning and development initiatives.
