LECTURE: Shaping Communities as if Sustainability Mattered

There has never been a more urgent time to develop our communities sustainably. But what does the term “sustainable development” really mean? And how do policy makers and local governments engage citizens to make decisions that are considered “sustainable”?

Two of Vancouver’s most influential planning academics recently addressed these questions in a public lecture.   Dr. Mark Roseland, Director of the Center for Sustainable Community Development and Professor in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at SFU, and Dr. Ronald Kellett, Professor in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at UBC, lead us on a journey to explore the concept of sustainable community development, present new tools to compare alternatives for urban design, and discuss how to effectively engage citizens in the planning process through “measured visualizations.”
