I am a child clinical psychologist and developmental researcher. Broadly stated, my research focuses on the interplay between child characteristics and developmental psychopathology.
There are two broad themes in my work. The first focuses on anxiety and coping in childhood. I am particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms underlying risk for anxiety disorders in children and how best to treat these difficulties when they arise. The second area of research is focused on the impact of early cognitive characteristics, such as language development, on social emotional functioning, academic achievement, and adult outcomes. Within this area, I have examined individual differences in reading disorders, determinants of reading skill development, and long-term adjustment and academic outcomes in children with a history of language impairment.
Current studies focus on cognitive processing biases in anxious children and group treatment for young anxious children (5 to 7 year olds) and their parents. My current research on anxiety in children is being presented at a free public talk, Psych in the City at SFU Surrey Campus on April 30th, 2008. A description of the Psych in the City series is available in the "Links" section of this website.
