Community Education Program

Welcome to the Community Education Program

The Community Education Program is situated in Continuing Studies at Simon Fraser University’s Vancouver Campus. Our mandate is to support positive social change for socially excluded individuals and communities by creating access to education and other resources. We work with multi-cultural communities who experience ongoing poverty, racism, gender bias and low levels of literacy.

Our work is grounded in community-based projects which address critical needs identified by the community, and in which community members play active roles in decision making, implementation and evaluation. All projects provide opportunities for participants to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out their community work.

The work that we do in Community Education Programs is based on a number of firmly held beliefs, including:

  • Universities have a social responsibility to invest in our communities;
  • SFU is capable of playing a strong role in the growth and health of our communities;
  • It is desirable to increase and widen access to higher education;
  • Education is a vital key in promoting positive social change.
