Canada’s Coastal Communities: Building the Future

Examining Best Practices in Coastal Zone Planning: Lessons and Applications for BC’s Central Coast
April 2-4, 2003

The goal of this event was to learn about past experiences in coastal planning in Canada and around the world, to draw lessons on best practices from these experiences and then to explore how these lessons and practices might be applied in BC, particularly the Central Coast region. This event was both timely and critical due to the selection of the region as a pilot area for integrated management under Canada’s Oceans Strategy. The workshop assisted local communities and others involved in coastal planning by providing tools such as: gathering and assessing coastal resource information; recognizing Aboriginal titles and treaty negotiations; establishing common objectives and principles; ensuring local participation; and reconciling competing values and uses.

This workshop was helpful to a wide range of participants, including community, academic, industry, government and non-government representatives with an interest in coastal resources and therefore a potential role in developing resource use plans for the BC Central Coast and other coastal regions. A review of examples from other regions, coupled with broad-based community input and participation throughout the workshop, represented an important milestone in this process.

Finally, the workshop provided community-based recommendations for the implementation of the Central Coast national pilot project.
