Canada Chinatown Series 加拿大唐人街系列

A second project related to the national chronology described above is under development. We intend to publish the Canada Chinatown Series as a set of companion documents to be used in conjunction with our national chronolgy and provided to educational, government and community organizations. These booklets will be produced in cooperation with universities and local community historians and the final text produced by Professor David Chuenyan Lai with assistance from our project team at the David Lam Centre. Our intention is to produce brief authoritative documentation of local Chinatown histories.

The first publication in the Canada Chinatown Series, is focused on Victoria's Chinatown; the first in Canada. It was completed in October 2011 and was enthusiastically supported by Victoria’s Mayor Dean Fortin and Victoria City Council. In 2012, we completed a second booklet on Vancouver’s Chinatown and a third on Toronto's Chinatowns. Work is also well advanced on editions covering Ottawa, Edmonton and Montréal which we plan to publish in 2013.

To date funds for this portion of the project have been provided by:

  • Victoria Foundation
  • Citizenship and Immigration Canada
  • University of Victoria
  • City of Victoria
  • Tourism Victoria
  • Downtown Victoria Business Association
  • Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association
