Part of SFU David Lam Centre’s mandate is to facilitate engagement and research between SFU faculty and Asia. All SFU faculty (including limited term lectures) conducting Asia-related research are eligible for DLC funding. Faculty must be a member of DLC to apply for funding.

DLC Visiting Scholars
A DLC Member who agrees to be the primary faculty contact for a DLC Visiting Scholar must organize at least one public lecture (in English or Chinese) and encourage engagement by the visiting scholar with the SFU academic community.
Visiting scholars are usually persons with significant academic, literary or artistic qualifications. Besides conducting their own research at the David Lam Centre, they are also expected to participate in the SFU academic community and in wider community activities by attending lectures sponsored by the DLC, workshops and colloquia, and presenting original research.

We aim to provide faculty with support with relatively straight forward and simple application and follow up requirements.
Some activities funded by the DLC are, for example, research trips, research assistants, reading groups, and visiting speakers. For a full list of eligible expenses, please see our funding policy here.
We offer two funding awards. A small award of up to $2000 is offered on a rolling basis, and we aim to make funding decisions within two weeks. A large award of up to $7000 is offered in two annual competitions, one in February and one in October.
As important as funding, we can also provide logistical support, such as working with visitors to assist in expense claims or reimbursement to departmental accounts. Given adequate lead time, we can coordinate events by booking rooms at Harbour Centre; organizing food and drink; preparing event posters; and announcing the event to our networks. In some cases, we may also provide funds for a dinner after a lecture.
For visiting speakers, we encourage you to seek additional funding, such as from your own department or if your there is interest in another department as well, you can apply for internal support.
Individual research or travel grants offered by ORS (expand below or visit ORS website here):
- VPR Travel Grants are provided for faculty in areas supported by SSHRC to attend conferences to present a paper (including the presentation of a poster in a poster session), to serve as a keynote speaker or in the case of faculty in the School for the Contemporary Arts, to present one’s own creative work to a peer group. Faculty are eligible for this grant once every two years. Presently, it covers airfare (domestic: $500; international: $1,200).
- SSHRC Small Grants support scholarly research in the contemporary arts, humanities and social sciences for expenses up to a maximum of $7,000. A lead applicant, together with one or more eligible coinvestigators may apply in a single application for up to a maximum of $10,000.
Workshops or visiting speaker grants offered by FASS (expand below or visit FASS website here):
- FASS Rapid Response Grant provide ssupport for continuing faculty members in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) to address current topics of general interest both promptly and publicly. A maximum of $5,000 will be available once per calendar year for continuing FASS faculty members to host an event. Multi-Faculty events will be supported only if other Faculties match FASS support (to a maximum of $5,000). Applications may be submitted at any time to the Associate Dean, Research; support is contingent on availablility of funds in the Dean's Office. All applications must be supported by Department, School or Program Chairs/Directors. FASS Rapid Response Fund events must be explicitly targeted for community engagement and must be open to the public. Faculty members will be expected to work with the FASS Communications Officer to publicise their event.
- FASS Visiting Speakers Fund provides Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) funding to invite speakers to SFU. A maximum of $5,000 will be available for two or more faculty members from different Departments, Schools or Programs OR one faculty member and one retired faculty member, to apply together to host a visiting speaker at SFU. Applications from one Department, School or Program will not be accepted unless one of the applying faculty members is retired. Applications should be submitted to the Associate Dean, Research; support is contingent on availablility of funds in the Dean's Office. Each faculty member is limited to one application per calendar year. Multi-Faculty events will be supported only if other Faculties match FASS support (to a maximum of $5,000). At least one event with the visiting speaker must be open to the public; faculty members will be expected to work with the FASS Communications Officer to publicise their event.
