Powell Street Festival 2020 (Online Telethon)

August 01, 2020

Celebrate Japanese Canadian culture while giving back to your community!

Telethon Hosts: Tetsuro Shigematsu and Yurie Hoyoyon

The Telethon will be streamed on PSFS website and will feature appearances from local Japanese Canadian (JC) artists, vendors and booths, and community stakeholders who are the heart of the festival. In addition, our website will host an online directory to highlight JC food/craft/community booths and marketplace vendors.

100% of the Telethon proceeds will go toward PowellStFest Community Kitchen program. Starting in the fall of 2020, each week four peers from the neighbourhood will be employed to cook 200 meals for the unhoused and precariously housed in the DTES. The meals fill the gap of insufficient food for low-income community and the cooking program provides an opportunity for people to cook together, learn new skills, and build community. This not only provides a positive mental health experience but gives people the sense of gratification and steady income.

Enjoy live performances, messages from festival vendors and friends, and opportunities to express your support for Powell Street Festival in its 44th year. Drop in and stay for a while! Tune in to PSFS website with your family and friends to experience the spirit of the festival right from your home!

About the Powell Street Festival Society
The Powell Street Festival Society (PSFS) produces the annual Japanese Canadian (JC) outdoor festival that takes place in the historic JC neighbourhood, Paueru Gai located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Side (DTES). The Powell Street Festival is the largest JC festival in the country and the longest running community arts celebration in Vancouver!

Regrettably, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the cancellation of the 44th Annual Powell Street Festival as a physical gathering. But the spirit of the festival lives on in our online Telethon August 1, 2020.

Between now and August 1, 2020 help PSFS raise $20,000 for their PowellStFest Community Kitchen program! 100% of the Telethon proceeds will go towards this program. Please support by donating and consider becoming a monthly donor. PSFS is a charitable organization and will be issuing tax receipts for donations.
