Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find the application form and instructions?
These can be found here:

Do I apply through SFU?
Applications must be made to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of your "home" university. This is the Canadian university from which you most recently graduated or at which you are currently enrolled. If you have not recently graduated from SFU or are not currently enrolled at SFU, you cannot apply through SFU. Currently enrolled at SFU means that you are registered in courses or on approved leave this term. If you have been admitted to SFU to start at a future term, for example September 2019, you are not considered currently enrolled at SFU. You must apply through your home Canadian university from which you most recently graduated or at which you are currently enrolled.

Am I eligible if I have not graduated from a Canadian university?
You must be a graduate (holder of a degree) of a Canadian university when tenure of the scholarship begins in 2019-2020.

Can I hold a Mackenzie King Scholarship with other awards?
According to the Mackenzie King Scholarship website, "a candidate may not hold a Mackenzie King Scholarship at the same time as other scholarships without the written approval of the Board of Scholarship Trustees. This approval is usually given provided that the candidate’s total scholarship support, including the Mackenzie King Scholarship, does not exceed a maximum amount defined by the Board. Lately the maximum amount has been the candidate’s expected tuition fees plus C$16,000, but it is subject to change."

How do I submit the application to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies?
Please upload your completed application package as one PDF file (application form, sheet A, sheet B, and official transcripts - SFU transcript can be unofficial at this time) and enter your refererences' work contact details in GA3.  The 2019-20 Mackenzie King Scholarship competition is posted under the DGS department.
When completing the References section, select Mackenzie King Scholarship References from the drop-down menu as the Reference Type.

What is the format for the reference letters?
The three reference letters must include a handwritten signature and contact details and be written on official letterhead.  Once you've started an application for the 2019-20 Mackenize King Scholarship competition in GA3, you will need to enter your references' work contact details.  They will then receive an email to upload a reference letter.  Make sure they upload the reference letter before February 1.

References should be from persons who have an intimate knowledge of your record and ability and are able to give a critical evaluation of your plans for graduate study.

At least two of these testimonials must be from persons under whom you have taken your major work at university, or from senior colleagues with whom you have been associated in academic teaching or research.

Do I need to submit the printed official, up-to-date transcripts?
If you are selected to move on in the competition, SFU will contact you to submit the original printed transcripts.  Transcripts need to be up-to-date and official.  Opened transcripts are acceptable.  If you are currently registered in a program, your transcript should show your current term.

You will need to submit all your transcripts from all the academic institutions that you've attended.

If you are selected by SFU to move forward in the competition, you will need to order an official SFU transcript and submit it by March 12.
