Aboriginal Health Sciences Fellowship

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this fellowship is to offer financial assistance to and reward an outstanding doctoral or post-doctoral Aboriginal student with a research focus on biomedical or health sciences. 
  2. One fellowship valued at approximately $13,800 will be offered annually. This award will be split into two equal payments over the Fall and Spring terms.
  3. The criteria for this fellowship are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level
    2. full-time registration to enter or continue in a doctoral or post-doctoral studies in the Faculty of Science or Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University
    3. promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in biomedical or health sciences
  4. Students must apply on the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript and a copy of the transcript of the most recent degree program completed
    2. two letters of reference, with at least one academic reference familiar with the applicant's work
    3. a curriculum vitae summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this fellowship
    4. proof of Canadian Aboriginal heritage (First Nations, Non-Status, Metis or Inuit). This can include, but is not limited to, Indian or Metis status cards, official Inuit identification, official letters from Aboriginal organizations, or a combination of documents.
  5. Applications should be sent directly to the Faculty of Health Science by May 30. The Dean, Faculty of Health Science will forward one nomination from the pool of applicants to the Dean of Graduate Studies by June 30.
  6. The fellowship will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies, on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences.
