Julie Andreyev—Animal Lover Scholarship in Animal Ethics

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and provide financial support to one or more graduate students in Graduate Liberal Studies who are pursuing research and/or critical art practive in relation to expanding ethics for other-than-human animals. Examples of territories of research may include: ethics of care, ecofeminism, ecopoetics, post-humanism, post-anthropocentric aesthetics, relational ontologies between human and nonhuman beings, critical animal studies, panpsychism, animism, environmental philosophy, more than human kinship studies, ethics of inclusion.
  2. Scholarships will be granted annually to a student(s) who fulfills the following critera:
    1. has a demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level;
    2. is registered at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program through Graduate Liberal Studies; and
    3. is pursuing research and/or critical art practice in relation to expanding ethics for other-than-human animals.
  3. This scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Applications will be made via the Graduate Fellowship, Application, and Adjudication System (GA3). Required documents include:
    1. copies of post-secondary transcripts;
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work; and
    3. a one-page proposal describing how the applicant's research and/or critical art practice will contribute to critiques of current harmful tendencies and propose improved regard for other-than-human animals and our shared ecologies.
  5. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the scholarship may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies, on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Director of the Graduate Liberal Studies program.
