Kaiser Foundation for Higher Education Graduate Scholarships

Terms of Reference

The Kaiser Foundation for Higher Education Graduate Scholarships were established in 2016 with a generous pledge of $60,000 ($30,000 per annum) froim the Kaiser Foundation for Higher Education (The Kaiser Foundation). The Kaiser Foundation Graduate Scholarships were established with the intention of recognizing graduate students in the Faculty of Applied Sciences whose research involves the study of modern digitally-controlled power electronics.

  1. The purpose of these scholarships is to provide financial support and recognize a graduate student in the Faculty of Applied Sciences pursuing research in digitally-controlled power electronics.
  2. Three renewable scholarships, valued at $10,000 per annum over two years, will be granted to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence and research abilities at the
      graduate level;
    2. registration at Simon Fraser University in either a Master's or Doctoral program in the Faculty of Applied Sciences; and
    3. undertaking research related to digitally-controlled power electronics.
  3. The scholarships may be renewed once (for an additional $10,000 per recipient), provided the recipient(s) continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
  4. Applications will be made via the Graduate Award, Application and Adjudication System (GA3). Required documents include:
    1. copies of post-secondary transcripts;
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work; and
    3. one-page letter describing how their current research is of relevance to the aims of this scholarship.
  5. The application for renewal for a second year must be approved by the Faculty of Applied Science.
  6. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the scholarship may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  7. The scholarship will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Associate Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The Kaiser Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Alpha Technologies Ltd., one of the world's largest power engineering companies and an award winning leader in the design and manufacture of powering solutions for the telecom, CATV (Canada), traffic, security, industrial and renewable energy industries for over 35 years.

Alpha Technologies was founded by Fred Kaiser, Chairman, who graduated
from the Ohm Technical University in Nuremberg, Germany in 1965 with a degree in electrical engineering. In the 1970s he completed technical and management courses at the British Columbia Institute for Technology and a Diploma in Marketing Management from the University of British Columbia.
