Edward and Emily McWhinney Foundation Hellenic Studies Graduate Scholarship

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial resources to a master's or PhD student supervised by faculty of the Hellenic Studies program in the following disciplines: International Studies; History; Criminology; Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies; Humanities or other related discipline.
  2. One scholarship, valued at a minimum of $6,250 will be granted annually to a student who fulfills the following criteria:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level;
    2. registration at Simon Fraser University in either a master's or Doctoral program and supervised by faculty of the Hellenic Studies program in any of the following disciplines: International Studies; History; Criminology; Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies; Humanities or other related discipline; and
    3. a demonstrated research interest in international relations, such as: European Studies, the Balkans, Mediterranean and Middle East, International Organizations such as the United Nations, European Union, NATO, International Court of the Hague, and other relevant international organizations. 
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies. Students may receive this award more than once.
  4. Students must be nominated for this award by the Director of the Hellenic Studies Program. The application must be made via the Graduate Award, Application, and Adjudication System (GA3). Required docuemtns include;
    1. copies of post-secondary transcripts; 
    2. one letter of reference from the applicant's faculty supervisor or a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work; and
    3. one-page letter describing their research interests.
  5. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the award may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  6. The award will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon the nomination of the Director of the Hellenic Studies Program.
