Wayne Goeson Memorial Award

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize and provide funding to graduate students in the Faculty of Environment or Faculty of Science at SFU, who are conducting research related to the ecology and conservation of fish and their aquatic habitats, with preference for a focus on salmon or steelhead and freshwater ecosystems. 
  2. One award, valued at a minimum of $1,000, will be offered annually in the fall term.
  3. The award will be offered to a graduate student who fulfills the following eligibility criteria:
    1. demonstrated academic achievement in the most recent degree program completed or in their current graduate program
    2. registered full-time in a graduate program in the Faculty of Environment or Faculty of Science
    3. demonstrated history or expression of interest in research or work related to the ecology or conservation of fish or their habitats.
  4. Preference will be given to students focusing on salmon or steelhead and freshwater ecosystems.
  5. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  6. Applications must be made on the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) and must be accompanied by:
    1. copies of post-secondary transcripts;
    2. a current curriculum vitae;
    3. a one-page research proposal related to the ecology and conservation of fish and their aquatic habitats;
    4. a half page personal statement of goals related to the aims of this award; and
    5. one letter of reference from an SFU faculty member familiar with the applicant’s work and interests in the ecology and conservation of fish and their aquatic habitats.
  7. If a suitable candidate is not identified, the award may be disbursed in a subsequent term or year.
  8. The award will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Associate Dean, Graduate Programs, Faculty of Environment.
