J. Abbott / M. Fretwell Graduate Fellowship in Fisheries Biology

Terms of Reference

  1. The award is funded through the J. Abbott / M. Fretwell Memorial Endowment established by Envirocon Pacific Ltd., Alcan Smelters and Chemicals Ltd., and the Federal Department of Fisheries in the memory of Jeremy Abbott and Michael Fretwell after their death in a tragic helicopter accident in September 1988. The purpose of this award is to provide annual fellowships to graduate students in Fisheries Biology.
  2. The criteria for this award are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the undergraduate level and, if applicable, at the graduate level
    2. registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program with an emphasis in Fisheries Biology
    3. a strong sports background is preferable
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Application is made on the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and must be accompanied by:
    1. Copies of all post-secondary transcripts
    2. One letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work
    3. A concise outline of the proposed program of studies
  5. The completed application and all supporting documents must be received by the Department of Biological Sciences by May 30th.
  6. The applications will be reviewed by the Graduate Program Committee of the Department of Biological Sciences which will recommend recipients to the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee through the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies.
