Discovery Foundation Graduate Award in Innovation

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to recognize and provide financial support to one student from an underrepresented group in the B.C. technology sector, including women, indigenous students or students with disabilities in the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization Program, whose innovative ideas in technology and science commercialization show great potential for significant societal or economic impact.
  2. The criteria for this award are:
    • registration at Simon Fraser University in the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization Program
    • possessing ideas in technology and science commercialization show great potential for significant societal or economic impact
    • demonstrated excellence in one of the following ways:
        a. academic excellence at the graduate level (defined as a CGPA of 3.5 or greater); or
        b. professional experience and accomplishments based on the following:
        • has a minimum of 4 years of work experience in a leadership or management role, including professional research experience
        • has demonstrated experience and accomplishments relevant to innovation
        • has a minimum upper division (or final two year) CGPA of 3.0
  3. Preference will be given to a student from an underrepresented group in the B.C. technology sector, including women, indigenous students or students with disabilities.
  4. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. Applications will be made via the Graduate Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3). Required documents include:
    • copies of post-secondary transcripts
    • copy of the applicant's CV
    • one faculty letter of recommendation addressing the applicant's potential in the technology and science commercialization field
  6. The award will be granted by the Dean and Associate Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Academic Director, Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology Commercialization Program.
