Elsie Jang Graduate Fellowships in Contemporary Arts

Terms of Reference

The Elsie Jang Graduate Endowment Fund will provide awards annually to graduate student(s) enrolled in the School for the Contemporary Arts. Students can be pursuing any field of study within the School. Elsie Jang's hope for this fund is to foster and promote the spirit of cultural diversity and harmony through the arts at Simon Fraser University.

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for students pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in the School for the Contemporary Arts.
  2. The criteria for this award are:
    1. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in in the Masers of Fine Arts program in the School for the Contemporary Arts
    2. demonstrated academic and research excellence at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and artistic excellence
  3. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  4. Application is made on the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript OR an official transcript from the most recent degree program at another post-secondary institution for a student just entering the graduate program at SFU
    2. a concise description (one page or less) of the proposed or actual thesis research project
    3. a resume summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this scholarship
    4. two letters of reference: one letter of reference from the student’s supervisor and a second letter of reference from someone other than the supervisor who is familiar with the applicant’s research abilities
  5. The completed application and supporting documents must be received by the department of enrolment.
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, based on the nomination of the Director of the School for the Contemporary Arts.
