Billy Jones Graduate Award in Physics

Terms of Reference

Established in honour of the late Dr. B.L. Jones, a faculty member in the Department of Physics from 1967 to 1981. These terms of reference were revised in 2008 to specifically target the award to doctoral students.

  1. The purpose of this annual award is to provide financial support for a student pursuing a PhD degree in the Department of Physics.
  2. The Billy Jones Memorial Graduate Award in Physics is valued at a portion of the earned income from the endowment.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. completion of the first year of a Physics doctoral program
    2. academic excellence as demonstrated by the applicant’s grades in his/her graduate courses, the applicant’s research progress and the recommendation of their supervisor
    3. registration in a PhD program in the Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University
  4. This award may be held only once during the recipient’s doctoral program, but it may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. The student must be nominated for this scholarship by the Chair of the Department of Physics on the recommendation of the Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee. The award application and/or nomination is made using the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) and must include:
    1. a nomination letter describing the academic merits and potential of the nominee
    2. a copy of the nominee’s outline of proposed research
    3. a curriculum vitae including a list of research publications (if any)
    4. a copy of the transcript for the nominee’s most recent degree program completed (BSc or MSc)
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.
