Dr. Imran Munir has had extensive work experience in media and journalism since 1986. His academic research and writings have focused on social movements, religion, democracy, fundamentalism, and political communication.

His thesis is a brilliant analysis of the struggles for democratic communication in the complex and compelling development of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This work addresses an urgent and critical geopolitical issue and is poised to have a substantial and enduring influence on understandings of how social movements instigate and direct social and political change in Muslim countries.

During his time at SFU, Dr. Munir has been associated with many social justice organizations, including Core Member, Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies, World Dignity University, Board Member, South Asia Network for Secularism and Democracy (SANSAD) BC, Member, South Asian Film Education Society (SAFES) BC, and Media Democracy Days, School of Communication.

Dr. Munir holds a lengthy and impressive list of publications including a forthcoming book on Pakistani media and democracy to be published by Edwin Mellen Press. He is currently working on his next book manuscript that addresses the role of new technologies and extremism in South Asia.

On behalf of SFU, we congratulate Dr. Munir on his outstanding achievements which are being recognized by his being awarded the Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medal as one of SFU's most outstanding graduate students from the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology.
