Yuan Echo Liao receives Dean's Convocation Medal
Dr. Yuan (Echo) Liao chose a timely and important topic for her PhD research question: As workplaces become increasingly multinational, how should cross-cultural performance appraisals be performed? She explains, "Performance feedback that motivates employees from one culture can frustrate employees from another culture. Understanding the influence of culture in the performance appraisal process helps managers in multicultural organizations deliver appropriate feedback and, ultimately, motivate employees to work more efficiently and effectively."
Her supervisor, Dr. David C. Thomas, says, “Echo was an outstanding student in every respect. Not only did her own performance as a student and research assistant reflect her intellect and hard work, she was the person to whom her fellow students often turned when faced with a particularly vexing research methods problem. Always eager to help and intrigued by the most complex issues, her future in academic research is indeed bright. No doubt SFU will be very proud that she was a product of its Doctoral Program in Business Administration.”
Along the way to her doctorate, she published one book chapter and four refereed journal articles in prestigious publications such as International Business Studies, Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, and Journal of Business Ethics, with others under review. She presented 11 conference papers and served as an ad-hoc reviewer for 9 journals, including the Journal of International Business Studies, the British Journal of Management, and the Journal of Applied Social Psychology.
She also received a number of awards, including graduate fellowships and SFU's President's Research Stipend, and a best reviewer award from the International Management Division at the annual conference of Academy of Management in 2011.
She is currently pursuing a postdoc in the Australian School of Business at the University of New South Wales, and plans to continue her exciting journey in academic research.
