Professional Websites for Graduate Students

March 12 update: All graduate students are now eligible for free SFU Wordpress websites.

Your academic website should help you rank higher in searches for your name, store all of your research and media mentions in one place, and show potential employers the scope of your research and impact on your community.

This workshop for graduate students will help you set up a professional academic website to help you build your online presence while you're a grad student at SFU.

The workshop will take place over two Tuesdays, February 28 and March 6, 1–3 pm, at the Burnaby campus.

You'll be required to bring the text and a few images for your draft website to the first class. We'll help you set up an SFU Wordpress template and do some light customization. (You can see the sample template at: http://blogs.sfu.ca/testing/tjlavend/ . Files you'll want to bring include your CV, research, education, and other items for listing on the customizable right sidebar of your website.)

You'll finish uploading and editing your website content between the first and second sessions.

During the second session, we'll help you fix any problems you may have encountered, and then cover the basics of Google Analytics and touch on other websites and social media tools that can help you build your personal networks to enhance your employability.

The workshop is designed for graduate students who are unfamiliar with setting up their own academic websites and no knowledge of HTML is required.

Instructor: Terry Lavender is a PhD student in SFU's School of Interactive Arts and Technology. His website is at http://www.terrylavender.ca/

The workshop is free. Because space in the computer lab is limited to 18, reservations are required. Please RSVP via websurvey.

FEBRUARY 3 UPDATE: The 18 workshop seats have all been reserved, but as we normally see a 20-30% cancellation rate for free workshops, please add your name to the websurvey and we'll let you know as soon as possible if we were able to get you into the workshop. Your response will also help us gauge demand for this kind of workshop.

Workshop is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Is this available for all departments as some departments do not have space for graduate students webpages?

Yes, it's open to all departments. we've got some SFU wordpress space on a pilot basis for the students who sign up for this workshop. We also chose wordpress because it'll be easier for students to move the content to a new home once they graduate.

Hopefully there will be another one this semester! My cohort and I all have a class during that time slot.
