SFU Work Integrated Learning has opened applications for the Students for Development Individual Internship.
Internships should be in the area of food security, securing the future of children and youth, and/or sustainable economic growth.
Students who participate in a three-month (90 day) internship abroad will be eligible to receive up to $6,500 to help cover the costs of their international airfare, visas, immunizations and medications, and daily living allowances (the rates for each country will be determined by AUCC/CIDA). Students who stay over 90 days will be eligible to receive $33 for every additional day up to a maximum of $9,500 for six months in the SFD-eligible country.
Internships may take place in any of the following 26 eligible countries: Bangladesh, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guyana, Honduras, India, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam and Zambia. Note, however, that internships for Canadian students will not be approved in regions where DFAIT travel advisories recommend that all travel or non-essential travel be avoided.
Students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, and be registered as a full-time-student when applying for the internship and be senior undergraduates, or master's or PhD students.
Students must spend a minimum of three consecutive months (90 days) overseas working with the local partner. SFD internships will be funded for a maximum duration of six months. It is expected that the students will work at the partner’s office or field sites for at least seven hours a day, five days a week (or 35 hours a week). Students may participate in internships during the summer or fall term of the 2012 academic year.
