Andrew Wade's fellow students and friends remember him as passionate, energetic and brimming with positive energy. His colleagues and supervisors remember him for his groundbreaking contributions to his field of visual analytics. All were saddened by his passing in a plane crash in Nepal on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

His supervisor, Brian Fisher, passes on word about Andrew's research: "It garnered awards from IEEE VAST in the Discovery Exhibition and the VAST Challenge, and impressed Boeing enough to create a position for him. At least two other companies were competing with Boeing to try to hire him, but Boeing won out. We are still analyzing video from his pair-analytics sessions with Boeing engineers, they are probably the best examples of analytic practices we have found in our work."

Andrew Wade defended his master's thesis in August 2011 but wanted to postpone his graduation for another semester in order to fit in a co-op term in India. He was in a plane which had just taken tourists to view Mount Everest and was returning to try to land in foggy conditions. (His thesis is now available online.)

A memorial service for Andrew will be held in Vancouver at 11 am on October 8, at the UBC Botanical Gardens. All who knew Andrew are welcome to celebrate his life and honour his memory.

His degree will be awarded at the FCAT convocation ceremony on October 6 at 2:30 pm and his family will be there to accept it on his behalf.

I have always been, and forever will be, fiercely proud of my little brother. What a gift to have him in my life. Age, continents, and now death, can never separate us. Love, your Sis

We met Andrew in 2004 through our son Kevin when both were students at UBC and soccer teammates and had the opportunity to spend time with him throughout the years. We remember a smart, funny, polite and caring young man with the most engaging smile. Our hearts go out to his parents, sister, family and friends, and we hope that wonderful memories of Andrew, his accomplishments and the way he touched so many lives will be of comfort at this painful time and in the years to come.

"no coward's soul is thine" . Andrew I can feel your prescence as I walk in the beauty of a locally loved run/walk, the Ditch Trail; a very special place for Don and Julie. There is a bit of early snow on the path and low clouds today, yet the majestic views are profound. Please know that all of you are in my heart ; there are no words. The heavens know how proud you are, and rightly so of your beloved son. my love , Sande

I remember him as a little kid with his father (Donny) in the Snowmass Village Mall in the late 70s. I worked at Snowmass Real Estate down the [open] mall in Snowmass from Donny's shop.
