We're sharing the contest entries from our Photos of Home grad student photo competition.

These photos are from Anna Vorobyova, School of Public Policy. She writes:

Photo 1: "Ukranian Marshmallows"

This picture was taken by my husband, Bryan, during our multi-day hiking trip with friends in the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains. It shows the delicious combination of toasted rye bread and bacon that we jokingly called "Ukrainian marshmallows". Bryan was reluctant to try this variation on the Canadian camping classic, but he loved it and took a picture of it. I chose to submit this photo because it reminded me of the beautiful lush mountains in my home country and fun times with friends.

Photo 2: "Courtyard Competititon"

This photo is taken in downtown Kyiv, Ukraine, on a nice summer afternoon. It depicts elderly gentlemen playing chess in the shade of the park. Chess was one of the most popular games in the former USSR, and the older generation of men still prefer this game over many other activities. I took this photo because it reminded me of my Dad who taught me to play chess when I was a little girl. Also, this photo captures the spirit of some older Ukrainians who are nostalgic of their Soviet past.

Photo 3: "Crimean Canyon"

This is a picture of the White Canyon in the Crimean mountains in Ukraine. I took this photo on our traditional hiking trip with friends. Crimea is a beautiful, multicultural part of Ukraine, which is yet to be discovered by international tourists. I chose this picture because it is a good reminder that each of our countries has its own "Grand Canyon", which is yet to be discovered.
