This photo, entitled "A Fishing Village in the City"" is from Jill Murphy, Faculty of Health Sciences, who writes:

I grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland and, like most Newfoundlanders, am fiercely attached to the place despite years away. St. John's is a city that is ever growing and changing, but which maintains so much of its history.

This photo was taken in Quidi Vidi Village, a 400 year old fishing village smack in the middle of the city. Growing up I loved leaving my house and walking around Quidi Vidi lake to the Gut, where the raw and stunning landscape never grew ordinary.

The history of the city and the beauty of the landscape were always accessible. The wharves and buoys are evidence that as a modern city St. John's maintains its connection to its culture and to the sea. I am lucky to have grown up somewhere where this kind of beauty was only a few steps away.
