Online Graduate Roundtable
November 04, 2011
A group of graduate students and postdocs have come together to create an online graduate roundtable. They've just started, and the questions are highly relevant to many SFU graduate students. We hope you'll check them out and provide feedback!
(There's a local connection — One of the roundtable participants is Penny Deck, a PhD student in SFU's Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology.)
Their introductory post lists the questions that they're addressing in the roundtable: (Links will be added below as the posts go live)
- Why did you go to graduate school?
- What is important when picking your adviser/commitee?
- How have you / do you deal with criticism and rejection; be it from advisers, professors, peers or funding committees? How did you deal with rejection when you were applying to schools?
- How have you/do you deal with criticism and rejection; be it from advisers, professors, peers or funding committees? How did you deal with rejection when you were applying to schools?
- Are there tips for fighting "impostor syndrome"?
- What if things aren’t going so well? What advice do you have for those who might having a tough time – either juggling multiple commitments, losing interest or falling behind?
- Is doing a Masters and PhD at the same school frowned upon? What about undergrad/Masters/PhD?
- What has surprised you so far about the grad school experience? In which cases did it meet your expectations and when did it fail to do so? (i.e. How is graduate school life different to undergraduate life?)
