Tax Information for Graduate Students

January 31, 2013
Print

SFU is required to report certain information to all students to enable you to complete your Canadian income tax returns. In February or March of each year, you may also receive slips from other sources (e.g. other employers, funding agencies, banks, child care providers etc.).

As a graduate student, you may have received funds from SFU through your student account and/or through SFU Payroll. You will need to download your tax slips accordingly (available by March 1st).

New to Canada? Because you asked, we've also provided a brief overview of the Canadian tax system - see Income Taxes for International Graduate Students.

If you need assistance filing your tax return, the SFU Accounting Students Association runs a free tax-filing service, run by CRA-trained volunteers each February/March. It is very popular, and fills up quickly. There are also Volunteer Tax Preparation Clinics and numerous accounting firms operating around the the city.

Hello!

I'm a new international student who joined SFU this Spring. I started my teaching assistantship in Jan 2013 so I am wondering if tax filling that happens in Mar-April applies to me at all.

If it does, can you direct me to someone who can help me out with what exactly needs to be done?

Hi Rimmy,
Income tax is calculated for a calendar year and the deadline is April of the following year. Any income you earned in 2013 will need to be reported on next year's tax forms.
Cheers,
Carolyn
