We're sharing the contest entries from our Photos of Home grad student competition.

Today's photo is called "Kibande" and was taken in Nairobi, Kenya. It's from Erick Oduor, School of Interactive Arts and Technology who writes:

This is a special photo for me because it reminds me of my estate where I stay whenever I am in Nairobi. I was in Kenya for eight months after spending a few years studying in the US. and Sweden.

During these months that I was home, I would pass these women selling roasted/ boiled maize, and vegetables daily on my way home. The lady in a blue skirt in the left of the picture was my customer — meaning I always spent 20 cents buying her roasted maize.

Since they know that I have been studying away for a while, they had joked that "don't take our pictures "loka"(abroad). I laughed because I was actually travelling to Canada a few hour later.

Besides that, I love to see my people live life with so much simplicity. No warning about impending bombs, no internet here, simple houses and people are just going about their daily routines. This is about 5 pm local time.

The picture reminds me of my childhood and how we just lived. This is in a part of Nairobi called Githurai 44 (Rorie). When I see this picture, I reflect a lot about life and culture.
