Contest Entry: Nikki Bakes

January 15, 2013

We're sharing the contest entries from our Photos of Home grad student photo competition.

This photo, taken in Stratford, Ontario is entitled "More than Bricks". It's from Nikki Bakes, School for International Studies, who writes:

When some see this picture they will only see a red brick structure, but to me I see memories.

I see my father labouriously building our home from the ground up. I recollect memories of me as a toddler helping him lay the bricks above the garage door.

I see the love of my mother painstakingly sanding an painting the white spindles of the porch banister on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

I remember countless conversations with friends and family, had on the porch swing - the very swing my father made my mother for an anniversary gift.

I see a trunk being packed with presents for our traditional Christmas eve gathering in the country.

I see the warmth, love and kindness of those awaiting my arrival home.
