We're sharing the contest entries from our Photos of Home grad student photo competition.

This photo, entitled "Cucu's Jiko" is from Gaju Karekezi, Health Sciences, who writes:

I took this photo of my grandmother’s jiko, a widely used cooking stove in Kenya, in 2011. Fueled by charcoal, jikos prepare food for millions of households across the country.

My grandmother’s jiko reminds me of home; of times spent waiting for the maize to cook so she could prepare dishes such as Githeri; and of school holidays when my cousins and I would be sent to our grandparents’ farm in Limuru, Kenya. The fresh air, open spaces, avocado trees, rolling hills of tea, and rows of maize, passion fruit, and banana trees created the perfect playground for us.
